I understand the basic premise - find an affiliate program; set up a landing page for the program; drive traffic to the landing page and link to the affiliate.
But, considering how many people want to do this, how do people succeed in competing with all of the noise out there for the same keywords and generate enough traffic to their landing pages to actually make a living?

As an affiliate program manager, I get to see what all the publishers in my various programs are doing, and how successful they are.
What I have found is that the affiliate publishers that actually make money are mostly of these types:
* Major Coupon sites, like retailmenot, and savings.com
* Major Bonus sites like Upromise and Ebates
* Major Branded Loyalty Shopping networks: like Cartera and DBG
* Virtual Currency networks that give users game points in exchange for completing advertiser offers: like TrialPay and TapJoy
* Major Product Comparison sites: like TopTenReviews
* Affiliates with coupon sites that bid on merchant Trademark+ keywords such as "Gap.com Coupon Code".
* Affiliates that cheat and bid on merchants trademark terms in google search, pretending to be them. (We use BrandVerity to combat this)
* Niche content sites that have high SEO ranking on particular product related keywords.
Note: I have never seen anything that made me want to quit my job and become an affiliate publisher. The big coupon sites often have over 100 employees, with whole teams dedicated to SEO. Everyone that makes money in affiliate, from what I see, does so by working really hard.
[ I think a good way to get started would be to take a product category you are naturally interested in. Use a tool like Keyword spy to make sure there is sufficient search traffic for it. Make a website comparing and reviewing the offerings, with affiliate links prominently placed. Ask the merchants for unique exclusive codes that you can promote to encourage your traffic to click through your affiliate links. And use a tool like LinkDex to guide your SEO efforts. Good SEO requires regularly writing original content, and getting other sites to link to it. Again, this is all real work. But if you like writing, and making websites, it might come naturally to you. ]

- "Making a living" is relative. Some would die for another $1,000/month.
- You assume keywords are finite and that there is ONLY a certain amount of them there. Understand what LONG TAIL KEYWORDS are and you will open your eyes to what real niche bloggers do.
- You are forgetting the most important part of affiliate marketing. It's building a list. So you promote something in the same niche you don't have to drive brand new cold traffic all over again.
- Many offers have continuity ($/month) and other have high ticket which you sell stuff over say $3,000 for bigger commissions.
Sure there is noise, but if you learn the craft and build traffic and a list the sky is the limit.
- I have been in the game since 2008 online starting with Blogger (not recommended if you are serious about blogging for profit) and have personally written hundreds of articles and have sourced thousands of niche articles.
If the space has competition, there is money to be made ;)
This is the precise reason most successful affiliate marketers don't blog or talk about how they do things. It only takes 1 person to bump a converting keyword.
To stand out you just have to be creative and original. The "Get Ripped" and "Flogs" are ubiquitous with affiliate marketing in todays world, but when they were first created by 1 person it had amazing results (not to say it still doesn't convert). You only see failing results when people jump on top of what other people are doing.
You could also spend more time on keyword research and find long tail keywords that can pull traffic in on the cheap. Maybe don't do the same offers that everyone else is doing and try a less popular one. There are other things to promote besides diet drugs and online education.
Lastly, test and measure everything. You could take a popular keyword and scale it all the way down to a certain demographic and age range.
Hope that helps.

Most affiliates only market online, so that's an extremely crowded market. It may work, but it takes a lot of time.
One strategy I've (surprisingly) seen work with some of our younger affiliates with a lot of time on their hands is actually cold calling. It sounds crazy, but our program at ProfitPress pays out $100 per sale so they've made it work.
You definitely need a high paying program to make this work. $20 per sale just won't cut it.

Its true what some of the answers have said about being a lot of hard work to succeed. So the key is to first find a topic that other people have a never ending itch to satisfy with additional information and resources and then create great content for such people that naturally links to affiliate product recommendations.
So that first key is to find your niche that you are passionate about and then build a platform for yourself to be an authority in that niche. This will always involve content marketing, the type of content people that people want to share.
Once you have this quite honestly the best business model is not purely affiliate income but also creating your own products (information products and physical products)

You know some people work successfully and never tell you all their methods of promotion. Firstly I think you should choose a niche and then work with affiliate program. I have been working with Amazon 3 years so far building Amazon affiliate sites. Some sites I am selling on Flippa and some which bring me good commission I leave for myself. If somebody is a beginner I would recommend him to check AmazonAffiliate.club. This club helped me greatly! You will find tips and techniques for your business promotion and information about increasing of revenue.

Most affiliate marketers prefer not to share what strategy they use or how they are able to earn income because chances are, competitors will use it against them. If you want to be an affiliate marketer, you just have to find the right method that works for you. It will take time like most people who have been doing this for years and have just recently started to receive real good income from their hard work.

I suggest working to become an authority in that particular field or industry. If you become an affiliate for an outdoor retailer, you should know which tent is better for sub-zero temperatures. Have a blog attached to the site, and throw some affiliate links in each post. Also, like Parker suggested, focus on a particular demographic.

If you go to a place like Empower Network, Clickbank or Commission Junction, the landing pages are already set up for you with your affiliate link. The work is done for you. See my link above.
Next, use a good blogging platform to write several posts ABOUT what you're selling...if you're selling energy efficient light bulbs, write about carbon footprints, home lighting decor, feng shui using light in different areas of your home, etc...and then post about the product and add your link

Often, most of the affiliates do not actually sell product first. What they do is build up a rapport and relationship with their list. When that is done, they can sell the products by recommending to them.
The world is so big, this is a very big pond with a lot of fish in it. As every affiliate is using a different method, hence what they do to drive traffic is different. Some focus more on article marketing, some focuses on social media marketing and etc.
